Paying buys two things: a much larger allowance, and the features that cost real money to run — voice notes, photos, shared links and karaoke. Every plan below is measured in tokens rather than messages, and that is a deliberate choice rather than a way of being vague. A message is not a unit of anything. “See you at 7” and a photographed restaurant menu are the same single message to LINE, and about thirty times apart in what they cost to translate. Charging the same for both means either the short messages quietly subsidise the photos, or photos have to be switched off.
The honest trade is that an allowance is harder to picture than “1,000 messages”. If your group is mostly text, you can ignore the number: free is roughly 300 messages a month, Personal Pro roughly 11,000, and you will not think about it again. If your group sends a lot of photos and long voice notes, the number is the whole point — that is where an allowance drains several times faster, and the rule-of-thumb table below is worth reading before you pick.
Every plan spends one clear currency — tokens — across every feature. You pay for what you actually use: a one-line message is genuinely cheap, and a photo of a menu costs what a photo of a menu costs.
Tokens are how AI measures text length. A short message is ~50 tokens, a normal sentence is ~200 tokens, and a long paragraph is ~1,000 tokens. A translation spends tokens on both sides — the message in and the translation out — so a normal message costs ~350 in total.
Because a 5-word message and a 500-word document aren't the same. A token budget charges you for the size of what you send, not the number of times you send it — and a token costs the same whether it went through chat, a voice note or a photo. Pay as you go spends the same tokens at NT$60 per million, with no monthly fee.
The honest trade: if most of what you send is photos or long voice notes, an allowance goes down several times faster than it does on chat. That is the cost being passed on rather than averaged across everybody.
